Swedish massage is the technique that many of us think of when we hear the word “massage.” It is the most common and widely known type of massage in the Western world. The primary goal of Swedish massage is to relax and soothe the muscles in the body. Swedish massage also forms the foundation for other popular Western massage techniques, such as sports massage, aromatherapy massage, and deep tissue massage. Additionally, it is recommended for first-time massage clients.
So, what sets Swedish massage apart from other types of massage?
How is it performed?
Where does its name come from?
Features of Swedish Massage:
While Asian-based massage techniques focus on energy points and meridian lines, Swedish massage includes techniques based on Western anatomy and physiology. It uses five different techniques to address each muscle group. The primary goal of these techniques is to deeply relax the muscles and tissues.
During Swedish massage, pressure is applied in the direction of blood flow towards the heart, which helps speed up circulation.
The massage therapist uses their fingers, hands, forearms, and elbows to apply pressure on your body.
Most of the major muscle groups in the body are worked on during the session.
A standard Swedish massage session lasts between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the level of physical and mental fatigue.
Swedish massage is performed using natural-based massage oils.
Benefits of Swedish Massage:
A typical Swedish massage session lasts between 30-50-60-90 minutes, starting with the person lying face down with their spine in a neutral position. The person receiving the massage lies on a soft massage table, and the body is covered with a towel or sheet.
The massage therapist usually begins with the back. After applying the five different Swedish massage techniques to the back, they move on to the back of the legs.
Then, the person is asked to turn over onto their back, and the therapist massages the front of the legs, arms, and shoulders in the same manner. Some therapists may modify this classical sequence according to their own style and techniques.
If you’re getting a massage for a specific area of pain, it’s recommended to inform the therapist about it before the session begins.
Techniques Used in Swedish Massage:
In classical massage, five distinct techniques are used to soften stiff tissues, relax the person, and increase flexibility. These combinations of hand movements and types of pressure applied to the body are developed to manipulate different muscle groups and address various issues.
Effleurage (Stroking): Swedish massage begins and ends with effleurage. During effleurage, scented or unscented oil is used to ensure smooth hand movements. The goal is to warm up the muscles, speed up blood flow towards the heart, and provide relaxation by applying pressure to the body. Effleurage can be performed with one or both hands, using the palms, fingers, or the back of the hands, depending on the area being massaged. Pressure is reduced as the hands return towards the starting point, moving away from the heart.
Petrissage (Kneading): Similar to kneading dough, petrissage directly targets the muscles. The muscles are squeezed, stretched, and kneaded with a pressing motion. Petrissage can be performed with one or both hands, and it helps lengthen shortened tissues and open up stuck tissues, accelerating circulation and detoxifying the tissues.
Friction: This technique involves applying pressure with the thumbs, palms, or the entire hand in circular motions on certain body areas. It is effective on hardened skin tissues, helping to break down fibrous nodules, known as “knots” in the muscles. This technique can be painful and may cause internal bleeding in the muscles. Friction is often applied to areas where tension is most intense, such as around the shoulder blades. The pressure applied should be frequent but not too heavy to cause damage to the tissue. The goal is to increase the movement capacity of the tissue in the area.
Vibration (Shaking): This method aims to release muscle contractions and spasms. It is used to relax smaller muscle groups. Short, rapid movements are made with the fingertips, and the frequency is transferred into the tissue. This technique is also effective for reducing pain.
Tapotement (Percussion): This technique aims to energize the person receiving the massage. It has a stimulating effect and is applied rhythmically. Tapotement is divided into three types:
Before any massage, it’s recommended to inform the therapist about areas of tension or pain on your body, whether you’re pregnant, and your pain tolerance. If you find the massage too light or too intense, make sure to communicate with the therapist.
If you have a specific illness or chronic condition, you must get approval from your doctor before receiving a massage.
Swedish massage, which stimulates the lymphatic system, has a detoxifying effect on the body. To enhance this effect, it is recommended to avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol for 24 hours after the massage. This will help prolong the relaxation effect of the massage. Additionally, it’s recommended to refrain from heavy exercise in the next 24 hours and allow the stimulated tissues to heal with proper circulation by resting.
