WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Did you know that Thai massage is a type of therapy that is as effective as many medical drugs in terms of pain relief? Thai massage is a dry massage session applied with different stretching movements similar to yoga, and it is very beneficial for almost every organ in the body. So what do we know about the history and benefits of this session method?
Thai massage is an ancient therapy method that has been practiced in Thailand for thousands of years. Thai massage is thought to have been developed more than 2,500 years ago by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, a friend of Buddha with extensive medical knowledge. Many Thai healers consider Jivaka to be the inventor of traditional Thai healing. Jivaka is also known as the “Father of Doctors” and as a tradition, traditional Thai healers express their gratitude to Jivaka before and after the massage.
Additionally, experts and researchers state that the Thai session is believed to have rural and noble traditions. Rural traditions have no scientific basis and are based on informal educational techniques. It is thought that these traditions were transmitted from teachers to students with a secret code. On the other hand, it is thought that the noble traditions of Thai therapy were developed by the noble class, inspired by India, China and the Middle East. It is clear that there is a great influence on Thai practices, especially from the Ayurvedic tradition of India.
Although the techniques and practices of Thai massage were developed in Thailand, the origins of this technique may actually date back to India. One reason why this technique is believed to have its roots in India is the yoga philosophy of this region.
Thai massage is quite different from other massage techniques, which often involve tissue manipulation. This technique is a dry massage session without the use of any oils. These instead include deep opening, applying rhythmic pressure and stretching. The pressure, pulling and movement or shaking movements applied during the massage increase regional blood circulation. Thai massage is applied using different parts of the body such as palms, thumbs, forearms, elbows and even feet.
Thai massage includes various yoga stretches that are thought to have healing effects. This massage technique is based on the principle of regulating the energy balance in the body. The basic principle of Thai massage is to work on the core of the body, starting from the outer areas of the body (hands and feet) and then working back to the outer areas of the body. In this way, energy flow is provided to the energy channels called meridians and at the same time, blood circulation throughout the body is increased.
